Access & Transportation

Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre:

    • Nearest international airports:  Pisa and Genova.  Approximately a one and a half hour drive.
    • Nearest railway station: There is a railway station in Riomaggiore on the main Rome – Pisa - La Spezia – Genova – Turin rail line and the main Bologna – Parma – Genova rail line.  Both rail lines connect at the main station in La Spezia.  Local trains that originate in La Spezia are the easiest and quickest means of transportation to and from Riomaggiore.  La Spezia to Riomaggiore is a ten minute ride.
    • Nearest ferry port:  at the marina in Riomaggiore.  (Note:  Ferry service is seasonal.)
    • Automobiles:  Driving in the Cinque Terre is difficult on narrow cliff hugging roadways.  Parking is available in Riomaggiore, but the hourly and daily parking fees are expensive, especially when one considers that they will most likely not be using their car while staying in the Cinque Terre.  If you decide to arrive by car, use the following Autostradas: 
      From Milan via Genova:  Use A7 to Genova and A12 to La Spezia. 
      From Milan via Parma:  Use A1 to Parma and A15 to La Spezia. 
      From Rome via Florence:  Use A1 to Florence, then A11 to Pisa, and A12 to La Spezia. 
      From Rome via Grosetto:  Use SS1 to Livorno, and A12 to La Spezia. Upon arrival in La Spezia use the main road indications to the Cinque Terre and Riomaggiore.  The drive is approximately forty five minutes.  
    • Alternative transportation rentals:  Bicycles, kayaks, boats, and horses.

    San Terenzo, Gulf of Poets:

    • Nearest international airports: Pisa and Genova. Approximately a one hour drive.
    • Nearest railway station: There is no railway station in San Terenzo. The closest railway stations are in Sarzana and La Spezia. Both stations are on the main Rome – Pisa - La Spezia – Genova – Turin railway line and connect comfortably to the main Bologna – Parma – Genova railway line in La Spezia.
    • Nearest ferry port: Located in the marina in town and in Lerici. (Note: Ferry service is seasonal.)
    • Automobiles: Cars are very restricted in San Terenzo. Only residents are allowed to park in the center of town. There is a parking lot on the perimeter of town, a ten minute walk from the apartment. There are hourly and daily parking fees for cars, but not for motorcycles. If you decide to arrive by car, use the following Autostradas:
      From Milan via Genova: Use A7 to Genova and A12 to La Spezia.
      From Milan via Parma: Use A1 to Parma and A15 to Sarzana.
      From Rome via Florence: Use A1 to Florence, then A11 to Pisa, and A12 to Sarzana.
      From Rome via Grosetto:Use SS1 to Livorno, and A12 to Sarzana.
      Upon arrival in Sarzana use the main road indications to Lerici and San Terenzo. The drive is approximately twenty minutes.
      Buses: The nearest public bus station is a three minute walk from the apartment. The public buses run back and forth along the coast from the main train station in La Spezia (the ‘L’ line) to San Terenzo and Lerici, and to the main train station in Sarzana (the ‘S’ line.). Both train stations are approximately thirty minutes away. Service is generally every fifteen minutes. Check the schedule posted at the bus stop. Also, the bus can be used to reach Portovenere via a transfer in La Spezia, and Tellaro via a transfer in Lerici. The public bus is an easy an economical way to travel in the Gulf of Poets.
      Alternative transportation rentals: Bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and boats can be rented in town.
